The Truth Behind Obscure Myths Within The Industry

The Truth Behind Obscure Myths Within The Industry

I’ve been in aesthetics for over 20 years, and if I had a pound for every myth I’ve heard, I’d have a clinic on every corner. But some myths just keep circulating, and worse, they stop people from getting treatments that could genuinely help them feel more confident in their skin. So, I’m setting the record straight.

Whether you’ve heard whispers in the gym changing rooms or seen nonsense on social media, here are the obscure myths I come across time and time again, and the reality from someone who does this every single day. I’m here to set the record straight on the most obscure, but still common myths I hear in clinic, online, and talked about between friends.

Myth 1: Botox freezes your face so you can’t show emotion
Nope. Botox, when done well (and by someone who understands facial anatomy, hi!), should soften lines and freshen your expression, not make you look like a mannequin. My approach is always about natural movement. If you can’t raise your eyebrows at your kids or pull a ‘really?!’ face at your partner, something’s gone wrong.

Myth 2: Fillers stretch your skin and make it sag later
This one’s persistent, but incorrect. When placed properly and in the right amount, fillers support the tissue and restore volume. What makes skin sag over time is ageing, genetics, and collagen loss, not filler. The key is to treat early, sensibly, and not overdo it. It’s subtle, supportive, and designed for long-term results.

Myth 3: Chemical peels will burn your face off
No not in my clinic! The ‘raw tomato’ horror stories are a thing of the past. Medical-grade peels, like The Perfect Peel (which I train practitioners in), are controlled and designed to target pigmentation, texture, and skin health safely. We’re not talking 90s horror stories here.

Myth 4: Skin tightening treatments don’t work unless they’re painful
Nope! The old ‘no pain, no gain’ approach is outdated. Pain is not proof that something’s working. Modern radiofrequency and ultrasound devices (the ones I trust enough to use myself) are effective without leaving you red and sore for days. No downtime, no torture chair required.

Myth 5: IPL and Laser Hair Removal only work on certain skin types
This used to be true. But technology has evolved, as long as you’re in the right hands with someone who knows how to adjust settings for your skin tone and hair colour (hint: experience matters!), it can be safe and effective for a wide range of people.

Myth 6: Microneedling leaves you scratched and scarred
When done properly, microneedling is one of the best ways to improve texture, reduce fine lines, and boost collagen production. We combine it with advanced serums and exosomes for incredible results — no scratches, just glowy, plumper skin. Trust me, I wouldn’t put anything into my patients’ treatment plans that I wouldn’t have myself.
